SAP HANA Multitenant Database Containers will become the standard

According to SAP Note 2423367, multitenant database containers will become the standard and only operation mode.

SAP would like to make you aware of an important change for HANA 2.0 SPS 01. Starting with this upcoming SAP HANA SPS, multitenant database containers (MDC) will be the only operational mode for SAP HANA systems. This means that you will no longer be able to operate a single-container system.

The SYSTEM user of the original single-container system will be assigned to the tenant database with the same password. You must set the password of the SYSTEM user of the new system database during the upgrade or installation process.

The default tenant database runs on the same ports as the single-container system and is also accessible through the same URLs. Existing applications do not need to be changed, but they now have the additional option of using the tenant database name for opening a connection instead of the port.

A system database stores and maintains the system topology, among some other tasks. This now has to be considered as part of daily operation. Get familiar with what is possible via the system database and via a tenant database. The system database also needs to be backed up and integrated into your backup schedule in addition to the tenant database.

Update from HANA 2.0 SPS 00 single-container system to HANA 2.0 SPS 01 MDC went smoothly as shown in the picture:
